"Lisa, Vampires are make-believe, like elves, gremlins, and eskimos." - Homer Simpson

I am now a wheelchair user. It took me a little while to get used to the idea but now it really doesn’t bother me too much. What does bother me though is the fact that it seems that barely anyone or anywhere else has got used to the idea that some people have to use wheelchairs!

I haven’t been to a gig in quite a while now but a month or two ago I really wanted to go and see my friends play with their bands. No chance! I wouldn’t have even been able to get in the venue in question let alone get to the section where the gig was or the loo’s.

The wonderful Jake has offered to carry me in anywhere like that if I want to go in the future but it seems like far too much hassle and a lot to ask. (and I’m still feeling guilty for nearly breaking his back when he gave me a piggyback up the hill to Corfe Castle a couple of years ago)

I can appreciate that it would be a huge expense particularly for smaller businesses to fully adapt their premises but from my point of view it sucks! (to put it intellectually) There is now supposedly a law to make things like this easier for us “less-abled” persons but this is only very vague as businesses only need to make changes to their facilities that are deemed reasonable within their budget. Ho hum, so it could be a while before us “wheelies” feel like equal citizens but hopefully we shall get there eventually.

…in the meanwhile I’ll just have to stick to head banging in the privacy of my own bedroom
